Statement of Purpose Edit (Before & After)

An international applicant's statement of purpose for an MSc in Data Science: the original opening, the edited version and the notes explaining each change.

Sample MSc applicant (fictional)AdmissionsStatement of PurposeEditing

The brief

An engineer applying for an MSc in Data Science in the UK had a strong record: four years in manufacturing and a self-built defect-prediction model. Their 1,100-word statement opened with a quotation, spent two paragraphs on childhood interest in computers, and only mentioned the defect model in the last third. The limit was 800 words.

The approach

Editing, not ghostwriting. Every experience, motivation and goal is the applicant's own. I reordered so the strongest evidence comes first, cut the generic material, fixed the language, and left comments where the applicant needed to add a specific detail only they could supply.

Delivered

  • Structural edit with a suggested new paragraph order
  • Line edit with tracked changes
  • Clean copy within the 800-word limit
  • Notes on how the statement reads to an admissions reader

The opening paragraph

Before

"Data is the new oil." Ever since I was a child, I have always been fascinated by computers and technology. My father bought me my first computer when I was ten years old and I spent many hours exploring it. This passion for technology led me to choose Mechanical Engineering for my bachelor's degree, and now I want to pursue a Master's in Data Science at your prestigious university because I believe it will help me achieve my dreams.

After

On the production line where I worked as a quality engineer, one faulty batch of gearbox housings cost more than my annual salary. In 2023, I built a model in Python that predicted those defects from sensor data two shifts before they reached inspection. It cut scrap on my line by a fifth. It also showed me how little I knew about the statistics underneath it. That gap is why I am applying for the MSc in Data Science at [University].

Editor notes

  1. The opening quote is cut. Admissions readers see "Data is the new oil" constantly; it tells them nothing about you.
  2. Your defect model moves to the first line. It was in paragraph six. It's the most specific, most impressive and most relevant thing in the statement.
  3. Childhood interest is cut. Nearly every applicant has one. Your professional work shows the same passion, with evidence.
  4. "Prestigious" and "achieve my dreams" are removed. They're generic and slightly flattering; the specific reason you give instead is more convincing.
  5. Please check "by a fifth". Your draft said "significantly". If you have the actual figure, use it.

Why this programme

Before

Your university has an excellent reputation and highly qualified faculty. The course offers many interesting modules which will help me to gain knowledge in data science. I am also attracted by the multicultural environment.

After

I am applying to this programme specifically for its Statistical Learning and Time-Series Analysis modules. Sensor data from manufacturing is almost entirely time-series, and I have been approximating methods I don't fully understand. I am also keen to work with [Professor name], whose research on anomaly detection in industrial systems is directly relevant to the problem I have been solving at work.

Editor notes

  1. "Excellent reputation" applies to every university you're applying to. Naming modules and a faculty member shows you've read the course page, and that you have a reason to be here rather than anywhere.
  2. Please confirm the professor's name and research area on the department website before submitting. I've left a placeholder.
  3. "Multicultural environment" is removed. It's true of most UK universities and takes space from your stronger reasons.

Summary sent with the edit

Your statement is now 790 words. The structure is: the defect model (hook and evidence) → what it taught you about your gaps → why this programme fills them → what you'll do afterwards. Your voice is intact; the main changes are order and specificity. Three places need a detail only you can supply. They're highlighted in comments.

Why it works

The edited opening puts the applicant's most impressive, most relevant achievement in the first three sentences, where an admissions reader skimming dozens of statements will actually see it. The applicant's voice and facts are unchanged; the difference is order, precision and confidence.
