Pitch Deck Copy, Slide by Slide
Headline and body copy for a ten-slide pre-seed deck, with the original wording and the rewrite side by side.
The brief
The founders of a startup that helps restaurants cut food waste had a strong product and early pilots, but their deck read like a technical spec. Investors kept asking the same question at the end of meetings: "So what's the business?"
The approach
Every slide headline was rewritten as a complete claim, so an investor flicking through the PDF in two minutes gets the whole argument from the headlines alone. Body copy was cut to the evidence that supports each claim. Numbers were kept exactly as the founders supplied them, with every projection labelled as a projection.
Delivered
- Rewritten headline for every slide
- Tightened body copy and data labels
- One-paragraph email summary to send with the deck
- Notes on where the argument needed more evidence

The startup, its product and all figures are fictional, created for this sample to show structure and wording.
Headlines only change the first impression; the full edit also covered body copy. Here are all ten slide headlines, before and after, with body copy for the three slides investors spend longest on.

Slide 2: Problem
Before
Food Waste Problem Food waste is a significant global issue with major environmental and economic impacts. The hospitality sector contributes substantially to this problem through inefficiencies in inventory and preparation processes.
After
Restaurants bin food they paid for, every day, and don't know which dishes cause it
- Kitchens over-prep to avoid running out, and the excess goes in the bin at close
- Waste is thrown away in one mixed bin, so nobody sees which dish it came from
- Head chefs we interviewed estimated waste at "a few percent". Measured, it averaged 9%.
Why it works: The "before" is true of the whole world; the "after" is true of a specific kitchen on a Tuesday night. The last bullet, the gap between estimated and measured waste, is the insight the whole company is built on, so it goes on the problem slide.
Slide 5: Traction
Before
Pilots We have run successful pilots with several restaurant partners, with very positive feedback and promising results in waste reduction.
After
6 pilot kitchens cut food waste by an average of 31% in 8 weeks
- 6 kitchens across 3 restaurant groups, 8-week pilots, Jan–Mar
- Average waste reduction 31% (range 18–44%), measured by weight
- 4 of 6 kitchens converted to paid plans after the pilot
"It showed us we were making twelve portions of risotto base for a dish we sell six of." Head chef, pilot kitchen
Why it works: "Successful", "very positive" and "promising" are claims; numbers with a range and a sample size are evidence. Showing the range (18–44%) rather than only the average is more credible to investors, who assume averages hide something. The conversion figure is the strongest proof of all: people paid.
Slide 10: The ask
Before
Investment Opportunity We are seeking investment to scale our operations and grow our team.
After
Raising £900k to reach 150 paying kitchens in 18 months
| Use of funds | |
|---|---|
| Engineering (2 hires) | 45% |
| Sales & onboarding (2 hires) | 35% |
| Hardware & operations | 20% |
Milestone for next round: 150 kitchens and £270k ARR (projection).
Why it works: Every investor's first three questions are how much, for what and to get where. The rewrite answers all three in one line and one table, and labels the projection clearly as a projection, which investors notice and respect.

Subject: Wasteless: pre-seed, 6 pilots, 31% less food waste
Hi [Name],
Wasteless puts a camera over restaurant bins and tells chefs which dishes they're over-prepping. In 8-week pilots with 6 kitchens, waste fell by an average of 31%, and 4 of the 6 kitchens now pay us.
We're raising £900k to reach 150 kitchens. Deck attached. Would you be open to 20 minutes next week?

Why it works
Read in order, the headlines now tell the investment story on their own: problem, why now, solution, proof, market, business model, team, ask. That matters because most investors skim a deck before deciding whether to take the meeting, and headlines are what gets read.
